10th-ranked Huskies seek turnaround against Irish

NCAA Basketball Betting Lines

01/02/2010 - Hartford, CT (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The 10th-ranked Connecticut Huskies return to the friendly confines of the XL Center, as they welcome the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to Hartford for a Big East showdown.

Jim Calhoun's Huskies are a perfect 8-0 at home this season, but their first action as a true road team resulted in Wednesday's Big East opening loss at Cincinnati (71-69). The setback halted a three-game win streak for UConn and dropped the Huskies to 9-3 on the year.

The Irish have enjoyed some home cooking, playing 12 of their 14 games thus far in South Bend. Notre Dame will be playing its first true road game this afternoon and is facing its first ranked foe of the year. ND brings a three- game win streak into this contest and also opened Big East play on Wednesday, completing a 6-1 homestand with a 93-78 victory over Providence. The victory marked Mike Brey's 200th win at Notre Dame.

UConn has opened up a 15-6 advantage in the all-time series with Notre Dame thanks to wins in each of the last three matchups. The Huskies have won six of seven meetings in Hartford, including the last four.

The Irish are a dangerous squad and must be considered one of the better teams in the Big East, as they possess plenty of offensive firepower. ND is converting over half of its shots from the field this year (.508), leading to a hefty 84.4 ppg. The team's shooting acumen reaches beyond the arc as well, delivering on over 42 percent from long range, while averaging 8.3 three- pointers per contest. Notre Dame is led by one of the nation's best frontcourt players in senior forward Luke Harangody. The 6-9 monster has a school-record 57 career double-doubles and is currently averaging 23.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. Junior forward Tim Abromaitis pours in 16.2 ppg in support and is as lethal from beyond the arc (40-of-77, .519) as anyone out there. Veteran guard Ben Hansbrough (12.7 ppg) gives the team a third option at the offensive end. Jonathan Peoples was 6-of-7 from the floor, including a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range to lead five Irish players in double figures with a career-high 23 points against Providence. Abromaitis added five treys of his own en route to a 22-point effort. Harangody added 19 points and 13 rebounds to the cause, followed by Tory Jackson's 11 points. Hansbrough joined Harangody with a double-double of his own, netting 10 points, while doling out 10 assists.

The Huskies also boast of one of the Big East's top performers in senior guard Jerome Dyson. The 6-4 veteran had a huge game against Cincinnati, finishing with 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists, but it wasn't enough in a two-point loss. Forward Stanley Robinson poured in 22 points in support, but the team as a whole converted just 37.5 percent from the floor and committed 14 turnovers resulting in 21 points for the Bearcats. UConn is averaging a respectable 74.4 ppg this year, getting it done on .459 shooting. Dyson is converting just 40 percent of his shots, but is still pacing the team in scoring at a hardy 20.2 ppg. Robinson is the perfect complement in the frontcourt with 17.4 ppg. Kemba Walker runs the offense and is both a solid scorer (12.9 ppg) and distributor (team-high 73 assists). Gavin Edwards provides muscle in the low post, as the 6-10 senior comes off the bench with 10.6 ppg, while pacing the team in blocks (40).
